Japanese Sky Pencil (2.5 Quart) Holly Ilex Crenata | Tall Evergreen Privacy Screen – Unique Ornamental Berries

The Japanese Holly ‘Sky Pencil’ is an upright, dense evergreen shrub with a low maintenance requirement and a wide variety of possible uses. They consist of thick leaves that make them tolerant to wide range of climate conditions.
The Ilex Crenata has adapted to grow between USDA zones 6 – 9, but many have managed to grow them successfully in colder zones such as 5. In order to promote healthy growth plant in full sun to partial shade. In partial shade conditions they will grow slower.
A new Sky Pencil Holly will require frequent watering until the roots have been established. In hotter areas plants will require more water, but in temperate climates expect to provide approximately 5 gallons per week. The leaves should be dark green so if they seem light or pale this will be a sign of overwatering.
Once you have received your Sky Holly it is not time to decide how you would like to plant it. They are perfect as dense privacy screens, hedges or in containers. During the first few years these are slow growing plant.
Although not necessary winter is the best time to prune the plant as it is not actively growing. If you choose to prune do not cut more than 1/3rd of its growth. When planting space your Ilex Japanese Holly plants 1 foot apart to create a seamless appearance or 2+ feet to cover more ground.

The Japanese Sky Pencil is female only cultivar of Ilex Crenata. Dense evergreen foliage that retains its natural shape without pruning making it very easy to care for. Fully mature plants reach sizes of 5-10 feet tall x 18-24 inches wide.
MULTI USE: With its unique appearance you may find that there are several places that you may want to place your Sky Holly. They do well as container plants, tall hedges or privacy screens. In order for your plant to produce berries both male and females must be present for pollination.
EASY TO MAINTAIN: Sky Pencil Hollies retain their elegant form without pruning, but they often benefit from light trimming while still young. Prune during the winter as the plant is not actively growing while being sure not to remove more than 1/3rd of its growth.
USDA ZONES: Japanese Sky Pencil is hardy in zones 6 – 9. New Sky Pencil plants require frequent watering until the roots are well established. Make sure to avoid allowing the soil to become soggy as this will increase the probability of root rot.
